Module 4: Examining Assumptions and Beliefs

Objective:

To develop awareness of the underlying assumptions and beliefs that shape your worldview and learn how to critically evaluate them.

Section 1: What Are Assumptions?

Assumptions are beliefs or ideas taken for granted without always questioning their validity. They form the often-unconscious foundation of our worldview.

Examples of assumptions:

  • "People are untrustworthy."
  • "Success is only measured by wealth."
  • "The world is dangerous."

Key Point:
Assumptions influence your perceptions and reactions, often operating below your conscious awareness.

Section 2: The Importance of Recognizing Hidden Assumptions

Identifying assumptions helps you understand why you think and feel a certain way. It allows you to:

  • Challenge automatic judgments
  • Open up to alternative viewpoints
  • Make more intentional, informed decisions

Without examining assumptions, your worldview may go unquestioned, limiting growth and understanding.

Section 3: How to Uncover Your Assumptions

Steps to identify assumptions:

  1. Pause and reflect: When you encounter a belief or reaction, ask yourself: Why do I think this?
  2. Question your beliefs: Are they based on evidence or inherited from others?
  3. Consider alternative perspectives: How might someone from a different background see this situation?
  4. Use journaling: Write about your beliefs and analyze where they come from.

Example activity:
Think of a recent judgment you made about someone or a situation. Ask yourself:

  • What assumptions am I making about them?
  • Are these assumptions justified?

Section 4: Challenging and Refining Your Beliefs

Why Question Beliefs?

  • To ensure they are based on reason and evidence rather than bias or tradition.
  • To remain open-minded and adaptable.

How to critically evaluate beliefs:

  • Look for evidence supporting or contradicting your beliefs.
  • Seek out perspectives that differ from your own.
  • Stay curious and willing to revise beliefs when shown new information.

Summary:

Uncovering and examining your assumptions allows you to understand the roots of your beliefs, challenge biases, and develop a more conscious and flexible worldview. It promotes personal growth and increased empathy.
