The Inner Wilderness: A Journey of Discipleship Through the 42 Stops
What if the wilderness journey of Israel is more than a story of where they travelled? What if it also reveals the journey God takes us through as He transforms the human heart?
The Inner Wilderness is a 42-stage discipleship journey that follows Israel's wilderness stops in Numbers 33 and explores the inner formation of a disciple through the wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers.
Each stop reveals a different area of spiritual formation—from leaving bondage, learning obedience and trusting God's provision, to overcoming fear, pride, bitterness, divided hearts, disordered desires and spiritual warfare. Along the way, disciples learn practices that help turn biblical truth into a lived relationship with God.
This is not a course designed simply to give you more biblical information. It is designed to help you become different.
Every stop follows a practical pattern:
The biblical journey — understanding the significance of the wilderness stage.
The Desert Fathers' lesson — discovering the inner transformation associated with that stage.
Practising it — applying the lesson through practical spiritual disciplines.
Reflection and prayer — examining the heart and responding to God.
The journey moves from Egypt to the Promised Land, from bondage toward freedom, from self-will toward surrender, from spiritual immaturity toward maturity, and ultimately toward a life of love, humility, servanthood and mission.
The Desert Fathers understood that spiritual formation is slow work. Rather than rushing through the material, this course encourages you to take one stop at a time, allowing each lesson to become part of your daily life. The complete journey can be worked through over approximately ten months at one stop per week.
At the heart of the entire journey is one question:
Am I becoming more humble and more loving?
The goal is not to master 42 lessons or collect spiritual disciplines. The goal is the transformation of the heart. As the course progresses, you will develop a personal pattern of prayer, surrender, Scripture, community, spiritual practices and mission that can continue long after the 42 stops are complete.
The Inner Wilderness is an invitation to stop merely travelling with God and allow God to transform you on the journey.
